Welding is what some call a hot process that makes a job stick together nicely. By definition, it is a fabrication process used to join materials together, usually metals or thermoplastics, using heat to melt the materials and then allowing them to cool, a reaction known as fusion. It is a time-honored trade going back several millennia. The Greek historian Herodotus wrote in the 5th century B.C. that Glaucus of Chios singlehandedly invented iron welding. In the middle ages, advances in forge welding took place; metals were repeatedly heated and then hammered by blacksmiths until they joined together. Now it is one of the many processes to benefit from years of scientific development, and welding is a term that encompasses the joining process using several different power sources and applications.

While gas welding, commonly called oxy, is the oldest, it is a most versatile and common process. The acetylene torch was invented in 1836, but not used practically until about 1900. It is still used in many cases for repair jobs and welding pipes and tubes, although it has lost some of its popularity in recent years with the expanded use of various types of arc welding. One of the most used forms is shielded metal arc welding. Some of the reasons for its popularity are that the equipment is both versatile and inexpensive, making the process ideal for both jobs in the field and shop work. Other, more specialized types include flux-cored arc welding, gas tungsten arc, and submerged arc. With more complex jobs, a wider variety of tools may be utilized by our welders to ensure a job is done right.
