Industrial Rigging

Where would modern industry or building structures be if we never developed better tools to lift extremely heavy items? The ancients found a way to use counterweights to lift about 3 tons to almost 50 feet high. For their time, that was a very impressive feat. Today, one pallet of ½ inch drywall weighs almost that much, and construction equipment and materials can weigh in the tens of thousands of pounds. A simple counterweight lift is not going to cut it. The unusual shapes and sheer amount of weight would collapse it. Getting these sized items moved is not an easy task and not one that non-professionals should attempt. These items can be safely lifted and guided into some pretty tight spots with industrial rigging. In the Indianapolis area, Five Star Fab & Erectors are the best in the business.

Rigging Requirements

Whether it is moving a steel roller into place in a factory or getting heavy equipment lifted in a multi-story building, industrial rigging can be very dangerous. According to OSHA, qualified riggers are required for assembly and disassembly work, work within the fall zone, hooking, guiding, and unhooking a load, or making the initial connection for a load. These requirements are outlined in provisions 29 CFR 1926.1401, 1926.1404, and 1926.1425. Before hiring anyone for a job on a construction site where the crane has a capacity above 2,000 lbs., make sure they have been certified by an accredited crane operator testing organization.

A qualified rigger is considered one with a recognized degree or certificate, has extensive knowledge and experience, and has shown the ability to solve the problems of rigging a load. The experts at Five Star Fabricators meet the requirements and are Certified Crane Operators. We are also Carry Deck Cranes trained and certified.

Our Rigging Process

Based on the size and weights of the job, our experts choose the appropriately sized wire ropes, slings, skates, and turnbuckles. Each piece of equipment is inspected beforehand to ensure that it is in proper working order. Successfully moving heavy items is not a one-man job. It takes a team to set up, and while the move is taking place, our spotters make sure the surrounding areas are secure, and the load is acting as expected. Because the items we move are so heavy, even the slightest imperfection can lead to a dangerous situation, and our technicians are well versed in industrial rigging principles and practices.

What We Move

Heavy items must go up during many large construction jobs, and others come down. Some situations don’t require high lifting but are just moving one heavy piece to another place. This may include plant relocations, machinery upgrades, and dismantling and removing old equipment. Some items that require specialists include HVAC units, generators, conveyors, and commercial safes.
